Save-A-Heart Foundation maintains an administrative and logistical base in Miami, Florida and having had medical presence in the Children’s Hospital of Santiago, at General Hospital Plaza de la Salud in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is now opening her final and permanently program at Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) an State of the Arts advanced medicine private hospital(400 beds) with diverse social programs arranged. Outpatient services, medical screenings and post-operative follow up are performed in collaboration with, and through the gracious assistance of, "diverse pediatric cardiologist", of the Dominican Republic.

Why Santiago, Dominican Republic?

Save-A-Heart Foundation responds to a large, unmet need.

With a population of more than 3-millions inhabitants in the Cibao region, the city of Santiago is the second largest metropolitan area in the Dominican Republic. The area shares typical infant health indicators and cardiac epidemiology that are prevalent elsewhere in Latin American and Caribbean Region countries (e.g.: high birth rate, high infant mortality, poor maternal & pre-natal care, high poverty and limited access to public health delivery programs).  

In the Cibao region alone, each year, more than 700 children are born with congenital heart defects and the prevalence of acquired heart diseases is anecdotally high (no official PAHO data). The combined epidemiology results in a chronic backlog of some 400 cases (surgical candidates) per year.

Moving our program to Santiago was the ONLY WAY to respond to this large, unmet, systemic need for interventional cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgery services.

Managed in a progressive and modern way, staffed by locals and foreigners dedicated medical professionals, nurses and technical personnel, last high tech equipped with most advanced technology in the country and entire Region, have been the key elements Save-A-Heart has selected the HOMS as its primary surgical facility in the D.R.

With our initiative and assistance, the hospital will become the referral center of excellence; thereby allowing The Foundation to achieve its objectives in the Cibao Region.
